Stewardship –caring for our church, our message and each other

A place for personal growth and spiritual understanding.
A community of people who care about one another.
A church that makes a difference in Davis and Yolo County.
A religious denomination that works to make the world a better place.

Stewarding the Message

Stewarding is caring for something of worth. Our primary goal is to steward the message of Unitarian Universalism. What is our message and how can we bring it to the congregation and the larger community?

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis challenges us to embrace a larger circle of social responsibility than we could as single individuals. Together we offer a bolder voice for justice than we could alone.

Historically, we uphold that revelation is not sealed. Truth continues to be made known over time. This denomination encourages a search for personal truth in defining the sacred.

Our faith encourages reaching out to one another in right relations, so that we can grow a community of radical trust.

For us, worship is a joyful celebration of life passed through the fire of reason. Our worship offers people of many theologies an opportunity to reflect on deeper issues in our lives.

In our consumer society, we stand as a “contrast community” that strives to support religious diversity, seeks to understand and bring economic justice, and is willing to ask difficult questions to find truth.

Do we exist to support our own needs or to bring heaven to earth as our forbears imagined our theology could accomplish? For centuries, our denomination has lived a theology of making what is possible a reality in the here and now. Why should heaven be the only place for ideals?

For me, stewardship means caring for our resources. Yes, that means financial support and caring for our facility and programs with our time. It also means caring for the body, mind, and soul through training and education. It means finding ways to bring our message to the world, affirming the worth and dignity of all, and finding common ground when people differ.

When you give financially to this church, I hope you give with more in mind than how our presence benefits you personally. I hope you give because of what is possible for us to do in the world.

– Rev. Beth Banks, Senior Minister

All About the Stewardship and Generosity Committee

Stewardship Ministry is more than the annual budget drive. While that is the primary responsibility, we have also taken responsibility for our special collections, the offerings that we give away to organizations whose work furthers our UU principles and the mission of our church. We took this on as an opportunity for congregants to practice generosity and for the church to spread good will into the larger community.

Our ultimate vision is of creating a congregation that lives from abundance.

Our mission is to guide the congregation in:
• experiencing the transformative power of generosity
• creating opportunities to experience and express gratitude
• sustaining our beloved community

The committee is co-chaired by Jeff Lefkoff and Sharon Hale. Jan Bower, Jon Parro and Ann-Catrin Van round out the committee. Our liaison to the Committee on Ministry is John Ashby and our liaison to the Capital Campaign is Steve Burns.

Generosity as a Spiritual Practice

To welcome each and all, cultivating the spirit, serving others in our quest for justice.

The church is where we are called upon to continue expanding the depth of our relationships with others, with the world and with ourselves. This is a spiritual practice.

We recognize that we all carry a responsibility for stewardship—embracing generosity as a guideline to sustain the life and work of our church.

Ask yourself: What is it about this church that brings me here? What makes me want to support it with my time, talent and money?

How much should you give?
All of us can pledge generously in proportion to our means. Think of that as your guideline.
Consider joining the growing number of households who pledge 5% or more of their take-home income.

Traits of Excellent Churches

They share a vibrancy and excitement. Church is not a leisurely pastime, but rather a high adventure activity.
They give away a larger than average share to outreach efforts that serve the community.
They are not bound by tradition, but view what they are doing as a part of a continuum.
They constantly look for better ways to reach out and serve people.
They constantly re-evaluate themselves by asking hard questions like, “Are we performing in a holy and honorable way?”
They do not try to be all things to all people.
They don’t try to do everything themselves, but willingly enter into partnerships that allow them to work more effectively.
They are very deliberate about taking their members to new levels, in both their spiritual journeys and their effectiveness at church.
