Nancy Shaffer will offer several stories that hold kernels of our faith tradition – and invites you to bring yours.Nancy Shaffer is a former member of UUCD who has served congregations on both coasts and in the mid-west. A published poet, she is the author of the UUA meditation manual “Instructions in Joy.” Nancy begins a new position in Ann Arbor, Michigan in August – and is delighted to have some time of dry heat, green-belt walking, and re-connection in Davis before moving. WEEKLY BULLETINSummer Cleaning: Clearing Out the Lost & FoundIt’s that time again when the Lost & Found is becoming crowded with dishes, clothes, books, and more left here by congregants and visitors. Anything not claimed by the end of July will be donated to a local non-profit. Items can be found in the bench behind the Welcome Table and in the kitchen island near the fridge. Many items have names on them.Sharing CornerThe Harper Jr. High School teachers have selected UNIQUE participant Patrick Smith as this year's recipient of the "Husky Award". This award is given to the two Harper students with the "most excellent character." The criteria includes: a high GPA, excellent citizenship, being a positive influence on others, honesty, hard work, service to others and outstanding behavior". Unitarian Frances Harper would be pleased!Peg Collison is at home at URC and would love to have visitors and cards. Seph Stratton-Quirk has recovered from her surgery and is doing well. Schwarzenegger Declares Official DroughtHelp us to save water here at church by using water wisely and telling the office about any drips, leaks, or water running where it shouldn’t. office@uudavis.orgClimate Change and CA Water: A Young Adult Road Trip for JusticeAugust 2-10, For Young Adults ages 18 – 30Join us for an amazing UU road trip in northern and central California to learn about water justice and climate change in California. From the base of Mt. Shasta at the headwaters of the Sacramento River, to Tulare where rural communities have no access to safe drinking water, we will learn from local activists, experts, and one another. We will also worship, play, share music, build community, and enjoy the cool water of California’s wonderful rivers (including a day of rafting on the American River). We will bring our concerns, questions and experiences to our legislators and learn how to take action back in our own communities. Cost: $460 per person - (if your congregation sponsors you with a donation of $75 toward your trip, UU Legislative Ministry will contribute an additional $75, reducing your fee to $310). The trip finishes at noon on Sunday, August 10, after the worship service at the UU Church of Fresno. Registration deadline is July 18. Do we create injustice through a lack of awareness?Susan Donham at Starr King School for the Ministry and a chaplaincy intern at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She is the co-founder of Spinning Yarns Dance Collective. Before going to seminary, she wrote grants for Quinn Associates. Her work with seniors includes teaching exercise/dance classes at the Mission YMCA and participating as an “honorary senior citizen” in Stagebridge, a storytelling/theater organization.
